New Beginnings: A Billie Holiday Portrait in Oil

Today marks the start of a new painting project I’m incredibly excited about: an oil portrait of the legendary Billie Holiday.

Her voice, presence, and unforgettable story have inspired generations — and now, they’re inspiring this canvas.

For this piece, I'm working with Rembrandt oil paints — some of the finest, richly pigmented oils available. Their depth of color and buttery texture allow for subtle layering and precision, which is essential when capturing the emotion and character of such an iconic figure.

At this early stage, the painting is just beginning to take form. In the photo below, you can see the first layers setting the foundation for Billie’s expressive features and atmosphere.

This portrait will aim to reflect not just her image, but her spirit — the strength, vulnerability, and timelessness that made Billie Holiday a true icon.
